Resume Tips for Freshers 2025

Write a standout ATS-friendly resume with no work experience — every section, common mistakes, and formatting tips.

The Golden Rule: ATS First, Human Second

Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes before a human sees them. ATS reads plain text — not images, columns, or fancy fonts. A simple, keyword-rich resume in a single column format will outperform a beautiful graphic design resume every time.

Resume Section-by-Section Guide

1

Contact Information

  • Name (large, bold at top), Phone, Professional email (not 'coolkid123')
  • LinkedIn URL (shortened), GitHub URL (if active)
  • City only — no full address needed
2

Summary / Objective (Optional)

  • 2-3 lines max. Who you are + what you bring + what you want
  • Example: 'Final-year CSE student at [College] skilled in Python and React. Seeking a Software Engineer role where I can build scalable backend systems.'
  • Skip it if your resume is already strong without it
3

Education

  • B.Tech: College name, branch, CGPA, year of passing
  • 12th and 10th: Board, school, percentage, year
  • Only include GPA if it's above 7.0. Below that, leave it out.
4

Projects (Most Important for Freshers)

  • 3-4 projects max. Lead with your best one.
  • Format: [Project Name] | [Tech Stack] | [Live Link / GitHub]
  • Use this formula: 'Built X using Y that does Z' — focus on what it does, not just what it is
  • Add metrics where possible: 'Reduced API response time by 40%'
5

Skills

  • Categorize: Languages, Frameworks, Tools, Databases
  • Only list skills you can discuss in an interview
  • Don't list MS Office or 'Internet browsing' — waste of space
  • Good example: 'Python, Java, React, Node.js, MongoDB, MySQL, Git, Docker'
6

Internships & Experience

  • Even a 1-month internship counts — list it
  • Use action verbs: 'Developed', 'Built', 'Integrated', 'Reduced', 'Led'
  • Quantify outcomes: users, time saved, performance improvements
  • Virtual internships from NPTEL, Cisco, AWS, etc. are acceptable
7

Certifications

  • AWS Cloud Practitioner, Google Cloud Fundamentals, Meta Front-End, Oracle Java
  • NPTEL courses with gold/silver medal are well-recognized
  • HackerRank/LeetCode skill badges add credibility
  • TCS iON Young Professional and InfyTQ certifications are valued by these companies
8

Achievements

  • Hackathon wins, coding contest ranks (ICPC, Google Kickstart)
  • College fest wins, technical paper presentations
  • Only include if genuinely notable — a participant certificate is not an achievement

Common Resume Mistakes to Avoid

These mistakes get resumes rejected — check your resume against this list.

Spelling and grammar errors — proofread 3 times before sending

Fancy templates with columns, tables, or graphics — ATS cannot parse them

More than 1 page as a fresher

Using first person ('I built...' instead of 'Built...')

Listing skills you barely know — interviewers will ask

Generic objective statements ('Seeking a challenging role...')

Including a photo — not needed for most tech companies

Using the same resume for every application — tailor it

Formatting Checklist

Single page only

Recruiters spend 6-10 seconds scanning. One page forces you to be concise.

Readable font, 10-11pt

Calibri, Arial, or Garamond. Avoid Times New Roman — it looks dated.

Consistent spacing

Same margins (0.5-1 inch), consistent bullet style, and section dividers.

Save as PDF

PDF preserves formatting across all devices. .docx can break on different Word versions.

Name the file properly

'FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf' — not 'resume_final_v3_ACTUAL.pdf'.

No color except subtle accents

A thin blue line under your name section is fine. Avoid colored blocks or backgrounds.
